My name is Vivian Swayne, and thank you for visiting my home on the web.
I am a sociologist with concentrations in critical criminology and women, gender, and sexuality studies. I formerly worked as a residential and transitional housing counselor and have experience working with trauma survivors and the criminal legal system. My main areas of interest are policing, sexuality, and culture, and I have publications in the Annual Review of Interdisciplinary Justice Research, Critical Criminology, The Journal of Law and Political Economy, and Current Perspectives in Social Theory. Building from my recent dissertation, my research considers murals around the world that both reproduce and refuse cultural representations of police power, particularly murals painted by police agencies. Other research projects central to my scholarship include collaborative work investigating police calls for service in the South, community listening projects about police and school safety, and arts based research about Southern queer identity. Additionally, I am a mixed media visual artist and the sousaphonist for the Knox Honkers and Bangers, Knoxville's local adult marching band. Feel free to explore my site and contact me with any questions. |
